We strive to be Nationalistic! By: Keff Ng
1. Speak as much Filipino as possible. In our society, our conversations are filled with English, Taglish and even the occasional Englog, because of modern Western influences driven by the American colonization. However, in the process, our national language is losing its essence and importance in our lives. It is time then that we challenge ourselves to speak as how Filipinos did before. Most important is that Filipino defines us. It is what makes us unique from other cultures and countries. This is why Filipino is still important to us in modern society.
2. Hone your talents and work hard. Filipinos have been regarded by the world as talented and hardworking. The many overseas Filipino workers (OFW) are doing all that they could to provide for their families. Their remittances push for the development of our beloved country. Our talents and diligence could eventually contribute to the Philippine economy; it is a show of nationalism, a desire to push our country forward.
3. Support local small-scale and medium-scale enterprises. If we are not working to move our economy forward, we could already show nationalism by supporting local small-scale businesses. Even they work hard to move our country forward with their seemingly-small contributions to the economy in contrast to big corporations. They also source products such as uraro, otap, dried mangos and more from local farms. A simple token of appreciation is to buy their products. If everyone does it we can all contribute to the economy of the Philippines and promote our products to others, therefore showing nationalism.
4. Learn our own history. Our national hero Jose Rizal once quoted, “Ang hindi lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa paroroonan.” If we want to be nationalistic by improving our nation, we should look back, learn from history, and use our knowledge to be a productive and active Filipino citizen that can contribute to Philippine society. We can become model citizens in the process that shine the light for others to follow suit. If everyone joins the force, the Philippines can grow as a nation.
5. Know current events. Being aware of our surroundings can spring us to action to be nationalistic. Do not be apathetic. Ignorance will lead nowhere and might symbolize no concern on our country. On the other hand, we should know what we are talking about. We could condemn the Anti-Cybercrime Law, but not know exactly what it is all about. To truly pave the way to being a part of moving our society forward, understanding is the one most important factor of moving forward, of showing nationalism of our beloved Philippines, a seven-thousand-one-hundred-seven wonder full of potential to grow.
